MyTherapy App Review (2026): Is It Free, and Is It Right for Your Parent?

What the MyTherapy pill reminder does, what is free and what costs money, what its family profiles can and cannot do, and how it compares with Medisafe.

The MyTherapy app is a free pill reminder and health diary from smartpatient, a German company. It is free to use, with ads, and it lets you manage several family members’ medicines from one account. What it does not describe is any way to alert you on your own phone when your parent misses a dose.

This review is based on MyTherapy’s own website, its App Store and Google Play listings, and published reviews, all checked on September 30, 2026. It is not a hands-on clinical test. Where we could not confirm something, we say so.

What is the MyTherapy app?

MyTherapy is a medication reminder and pill tracker app made by smartpatient gmbh, based in Munich, Germany. On Google Play it is called “Meds & Pill Reminder MyTherapy.” On the U.S. App Store it is listed as “Pill Reminder MyTherapy.” The Android version shows more than 5 million downloads.

The company says the MyTherapy app “always has been and always will remain free to use.” To pay for that, it works with “partners such as pharmaceutical companies and healthcare institutes,” and says personal data is never handed over to those partners. The App Store description adds that the company is independently certified to standards including ISO 13485 and ISO 27001.

How MyTherapy reminders and the dose log work

You add each medicine with its schedule. At dose time the app sends a reminder, and you confirm the dose in the app. Those confirmations build a daily log of what was taken. One App Store reviewer pointed out that you can log the time you actually took a dose, not just the time you were reminded.

According to the vendor’s site and the store listings, the MyTherapy pill reminder also covers:

  • Refill and prescription reminders that warn you before a medicine runs out.
  • Notes for each dose, so you can record something unusual.
  • Measurements such as blood pressure, weight and blood sugar, with reminders for more than 20 types.
  • A symptom, pain and mood diary, plus injection site tracking.
  • Doctor appointment reminders.
  • Monthly health reports. MyTherapy says you can share your medication plan and intake diary with a doctor using a one-time code.
  • Streaks that count consistent days, and Apple Health sync on iPhone.

That is a lot for a free app. For a comparison, see what a good medication tracker app should record.

Is MyTherapy free? What the ad-free subscription and Plus cost

Yes, the core app is free. But “free” comes with ads, and there are paid extras. Several older reviews still say MyTherapy has no ads and no paid features. That is out of date. Here is what the listings show today.

Free$0All core features. App Store: “Contains Advertising.” Google Play: “Contains ads.”
MyTherapy Ad-free Subscription$0.99 or $9.99Two price points are listed. The listing does not say which is monthly or yearly.
MyTherapy Plus Lifetime$49.99 one-timeListed as an in-app purchase. We found no vendor page that explains what Plus adds.
MyTherapy free and paid options, from the U.S. App Store and Google Play listings, checked September 30, 2026.

Google Play shows “In-app purchases” but does not list prices on the web page, so check inside the app on Android. Before paying for Plus, ask MyTherapy support what it includes, since the listing does not say.

Ads and privacy: what the store listings say

Every app on the App Store and Google Play has to declare how it handles data. Here is what smartpatient declared for MyTherapy:

  • App Store: “Identifiers” may be used to track you across apps and websites owned by other companies. Data used for “Third-Party Advertising” includes device ID, usage data and advertising data. Health and fitness data is collected for analytics and app functionality, and is listed as not linked to your identity.
  • Google Play: the app may share personal info and app performance data with third parties. It collects personal info and health and fitness data. Data is encrypted in transit, and you can ask for it to be deleted.

None of this is unusual for a free, ad-supported app. But a parent’s medicine list is personal. Read the listing’s privacy section with your parent before you set it up, and consider the ad-free option if ads would confuse them.

Can families use MyTherapy? Profiles vs missed-dose alerts

MyTherapy’s Google Play listing promises “Family profiles for shared care” and says you can “manage multiple profiles in one account” to track medicines for your loved ones. That is useful if you live with your parent and keep their schedule on your own phone.

It is not the same as a family alert. We found no MyTherapy page or listing that says a second person, on their own phone, gets told when a dose is not confirmed. One older third-party review mentions a “team” feature, but the vendor does not describe it today, so we would not rely on it.

One more thing to watch: the App Store line “Supports Family Sharing” is about sharing paid purchases with your Apple family group. It does not share medicine data.

If your parent lives alone and you mainly want to know whether today’s pills were taken, read how to know if a parent took their medicine for other ways to check.

MyTherapy on iPhone and Android

On iPhone, the App Store lists MyTherapy for iPhone and iPad, both needing iOS or iPadOS 17.0 or later. It is available in English and 31 other languages. No Apple Watch app is listed. The Android version is on Google Play. Neither listing mentions a web version.

If your parent wants reminders on their wrist, Apple’s built-in Medications feature works on Apple Watch. We explain the setup in how to set medication reminders on iPhone, Apple Watch and Android.

MyTherapy strengths

  • Free to use, and the listings mention no cap on the number of medicines.
  • Reminders, a dose log, refill alerts and appointment reminders in one app.
  • Measurements and a symptom diary, useful before a doctor visit.
  • Several people’s schedules in one account.
  • Well rated: 4.8 out of 5 from about 8,500 ratings on the U.S. App Store and 4.5 from about 241,000 reviews on Google Play (checked September 30, 2026).

Limitations for caregivers of elderly parents

  • No described remote alert. If your parent misses a dose, nothing in the listings says you will hear about it.
  • Ads on the free version. Some older adults may tap an ad by mistake.
  • It depends on tapping. Like every reminder app, the log shows what was confirmed, not what was swallowed.
  • Setup takes effort. Healthify, a New Zealand health site, called initial setup “quite tedious.” Plan to do it together.
  • Some Android users disliked a redesign. Google Play reviews from late 2024 complain about more check boxes and fewer quick actions from the notification.

MyTherapy vs Medisafe

Medisafe is the app people most often weigh against MyTherapy. The main trade-off: MyTherapy is free with ads, while Medisafe says it is ad-free (its Google Play listing still shows “Contains ads”) and can alert a family member, with some features in paid Premium. For the full picture, see our Medisafe app review.

MyTherapy alternatives worth a look

If MyTherapy is close but not quite right, the choice usually comes down to one question: does someone else need to know about missed doses? If not, Apple’s built-in Medications feature on iPhone is free with no ads. If yes, you will likely need a paid app with a caregiver feature. We compare the options in our guide to the best medication reminder apps, and the no-cost choices in free medication reminder apps.

Who MyTherapy is best for, and who should skip it

A good fit if:

  • Your parent is comfortable with a smartphone and manages their own medicines.
  • You live with your parent and want to manage their schedule on your phone.
  • You want a free log, refill reminders and a report for the doctor.
  • You do not mind ads, or will pay a small amount to remove them.

Probably not the right fit if:

  • You live apart and need an alert when a dose is missed.
  • Several siblings need to see the same log on their own phones.
  • Your parent wants reminders on an Apple Watch app.
  • Your parent would be confused by ads.

What we’re building: DoseAnchor (planned, not launched)

DoseAnchor is the app we are building for exactly the gap above: a parent takes their medicine at home, and family can see it without phoning. It is launching on iOS and Android and is not available yet, so we do not rank it against MyTherapy or Medisafe. Here is what is planned:

  • Free: 1 patient profile, up to 5 medicines, dose reminders with follow-ups and quiet hours, dose logging (taken, skipped or missed), pill count and refill reminders, appointment reminders, stats and a shareable health summary, a one-tap “I’m Okay” check-in, and 1 caregiver who can view the patient’s medicines and doses.
  • Premium ($4.99/month or $39/year): multiple patient profiles, unlimited medicines, up to 3 caregivers per patient, a missed-dose alert to the primary caregiver about 30 minutes after a dose goes unconfirmed (push and email), escalation to backup caregivers at about 60 minutes, low-stock emails, a daily summary email every evening, caregiver alert controls, a full refill dashboard, and CSV export of dose history.
  • Missed-dose alerts to family members are a Premium feature: the primary caregiver is alerted about 30 minutes after an unconfirmed dose, and up to 2 backup caregivers at about 60 minutes, by push notification and email. On the Free plan, 1 caregiver can view the dose log but does not receive missed-dose alerts.

Honest limits: DoseAnchor will rely on your parent tapping “Taken,” so it cannot verify a pill was swallowed. Your parent will need their own smartphone. It will not check drug interactions or give dosing advice, and it is not a medical device. See the planned pricing or join the waitlist to hear when it launches.

Frequently asked questions

Is MyTherapy free?

Yes, MyTherapy is free to use, and its maker says it always will be. It is paid for by partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and healthcare institutes, and both app stores say it contains ads. The U.S. App Store lists optional purchases: an ad-free subscription ($0.99 and $9.99 options) and MyTherapy Plus Lifetime for $49.99, as of September 2026.

Who makes the MyTherapy app?

MyTherapy is made by smartpatient gmbh, a company based in Munich, Germany. The App Store and Google Play both list smartpatient as the developer. The company says it processes data under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and that it is independently certified to standards including ISO 13485 and ISO 27001.

Does MyTherapy alert family if a dose is missed?

We could not find this described anywhere. Google Play says MyTherapy offers family profiles, meaning you can manage several people’s medicines in one account. That is different from a family member getting a notification on their own phone when a parent misses a dose. If you need that kind of alert, check the current app or ask MyTherapy support before you rely on it.

Does MyTherapy work on Apple Watch?

The U.S. App Store listing shows MyTherapy for iPhone and iPad, both requiring version 17.0 or later. No Apple Watch app is listed as of September 30, 2026. Reminders may still show up on a paired watch as ordinary iPhone notifications, but that is standard iPhone behavior, not a MyTherapy watch app.

Is MyTherapy or Medisafe better for an elderly parent?

It depends on what you need. MyTherapy is free to use in the U.S. and elsewhere, with ads. Medisafe is free to use in the U.S. and has a Medfriend feature that notifies another person about 1 hour after a dose goes unmarked. Premium ($4.99 a month or $39.99 a year, as of September 2026) adds unlimited medicines and Medfriends, and outside the U.S. it has required a subscription since January 1, 2026. If family alerts matter most, Medisafe does more on that point.
